Kerr Lake State Recreation Area
Kerr Lake State Recreation Area in Henderson, NC is officially out Tenth Park in our 2025 North Carolina Sate Park Challenge. We came out in the afternoon to enjoy the warm weather, then to camp for the night. Check in at is 3pm- we stayed at site #20 at the Kimball Point Campsite. There are 8 access point with over 600 campsites to pick from! We got really lucky and didn’t have anyone for a couple sites on either side of us, so it really felt like we had the beach to ourselves. Other than sand getting EVERYWHERE (which is a given with beach camping) it really is the perfect beach camping spot. The sun set directly across the water from our campsite and I don’t think it could have been any more picturesque.
I was planning on going paddle boarding with Axel and launching from our campsite but the water was way too choppy from all the boats driving by. This park fully centered around the lake with only 3 miles of hiking across 4 trails- so if you don't have your own boat, the Hibernia Access has a private concessionaire where you can rent boats, paddle boards and kayaks.
The Visitor Center is located at the Satterwhite Point Access, they are sometimes closed on the weekends so call ahead if you need to head over. You can get to the visitor center without having to pay the entrance fee, but once you go to your choice of access there is a $10/day entrance fee between Memorial Day and Labor Day and $10/day only on weekends and holidays in April, May and September. If you’re looking for the perfect summertime park this is it!
